At ḰELSET school, we strive to be the greenest school possible. One of our on-going goals is to reduce the amount of garbage that goes to the landfill. As we all know, recycling is good, but reducing is better. In order to reinforce this idea, we will have our annual “Waste-Free Lunch” contest from January 21st to January 23rd.

A waste-free lunch does not have any disposable plastics, foil-lined packaging or tetra juice boxes. Please use reusable containers only. Buy juice and yogurt in larger containers and transfer to small reusable containers. This will also help you save money as buying in large containers is usually cheaper. Avoid plastic wraps, zip-lock bags, foil-lined wrappers and hard plastic containers such as the yogurt containers. Kids ask if peelings or apple cores are okay. Yes, they are as not only are they healthy but these items can be composted and turned into soil. Just remember to place them in the compost bucket,

Also, please note that on Saturday, January 25, there will be the plastics depot at Stelly's from 9:00 – 12:00. We accept many things that are not taken in the blue box. Please Google Pacific Mobile Depots for the cost as well as a list of the items you can bring there. The funds from this program are returned to schools to support environmental projects.

We hope you will support us by providing waste-free lunches not only next week, but year round.

Thank you.
